Head and neck abscesses in dogs


This retrospective observational study is recruiting cases of dogs that have been medically treated for a head and neck abscess, where a foreign body could not be identified on imaging. If you think you can contribute cases to this study, please contact the primary author (Syn Yoo Choi) directly:

Inclusion criteria

•Head or neck abscess identified based on cytology or imaging (CT or ultrasound)
•Treated with medical management alone after foreign body was not identified on diagnostic imaging
•Minimum of 1 year follow-up done

Exclusion criteria

•Surgical exploration was performed prior to investigation and medical treatment
•No imaging was performed
•Foreign body identified on imaging
•Incomplete follow-up in medical records or not provided by owner questionnaire

Paraaural abscessation after TECA surgery


This retrospective observational study is recruiting cases of dogs that have developed a paraaural abscess after TECA surgery. If you think you can contribute cases to this study, please contact the primary author (Moira Watkins) directly:  moirawatkins.vet@gmail.com

Inclusion:

Dogs diagnosed with PAA (suppuration extending from the external ear canal or middle ear cavity to surrounding tissues +/- discharging tract) between 1st April 2007 and 31st March 2025.
Dogs which have had a TECA, TECA + LBO or TECA + VBO surgery prior to the development of PAA

 

Exclusion:

Development of para-aural abscessation as a result of another condition or prior to initial TECA – e.g. craniomandibular osteopathy; ear canal separation; otitis media
Incomplete clinical records: must have data on original surgery type and date; follow-up surgery type and date or medical management used; follow-up data for at least 6 months or until death of the patient if sooner following PAA diagnosis.
